An atelier where the practice of drawing and painting are explored simultaneously or alternately as deeply interconnected disciplines. Drawing can serve painting, transforming, expanding, and giving it a new dimension. These practices complement, converse with, and coexist with one another in an inseparable way.
Throughout the course, we will explore different relationships between drawing and painting: drawing as an end in itself, drawing as a preliminary study for a painting, and drawing as an element that integrates, transforms, and evolves within a painting. We will also investigate painting through drawing using various exercises, languages, and pictorial approaches.
Within the practice of drawing, certain printmaking techniques and processes will also be introduced, not just as technical learning, but as tools to think through and deepen one's drawing and painting. Printmaking allows for a unique exploration of issues such as composition, chiaroscuro, mark-making, synthesis, and the relationship between positive and negative space. Through these processes, we can also understand how an image can be multiplied, transformed, and developed in sequence, opening up possibilities for constructing visual narratives.
